Windows Server Guides for Business IT Teams

Essential Windows Server guidance for South African businesses — roles, patching, Active Directory basics, virtualisation, and when to move workloads to the cloud.

Many South African SMEs still rely on Windows Server for file shares, domain authentication, line-of-business applications, and print services. Keeping servers secure and supported is critical — end-of-life operating systems are a common entry point for ransomware.

Know your server roles

  • Domain Controller (AD DS) — authenticates users and applies Group Policy. Never browse the internet from a DC.
  • File Server — centralises documents; pair with proper backups and volume shadow copies.
  • Hyper-V Host — runs virtual machines; patch the host and guests separately.
  • RDS / Remote Desktop — limit exposure; use VPN or Entra application proxy instead of open RDP to the internet.

Patching and maintenance windows

Apply Windows Updates on a fixed schedule — monthly for production, with a test group receiving patches one week earlier. Document reboot requirements so finance and operations teams are not surprised by overnight restarts.

Use WSUS or cloud-delivered updates via Windows Update for Business depending on your environment size. Servers without current patches should not face the public internet.

Active Directory hygiene

  • Organise users and computers in logical OUs so Group Policy targets the right machines.
  • Disable — do not delete — accounts for departed employees until mailbox and file ownership is transferred.
  • Run periodic audits for stale computer objects and admin accounts that are not protected by MFA (prefer Entra ID for cloud admin).

Virtualisation best practices

Snapshot VMs before major upgrades but do not leave snapshots in place for weeks — they grow and slow performance. Allocate resources based on monitoring data, not guesswork.

Maintain offline backups of VM configurations and test restores at least quarterly.

Plan your server lifecycle

If servers only host file shares and print, evaluate Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and Entra ID as successors. FKS Computers helps South African businesses modernise Windows Server estates without disrupting daily operations.
