Wi-Fi Troubleshooting for Offices and Remote Teams

Fix slow or unreliable office Wi-Fi — channel planning, access point placement, interference, mesh vs wired APs, and security settings for South African workplaces.

Poor Wi-Fi frustrates staff and hurts video calls — common in open-plan offices, warehouses with metal racking, and homes on congested residential estates. Most issues are fixable without replacing everything.

Start with the basics

  • Reboot the access point and the device — still the fastest first step.
  • Confirm the device is on the correct SSID (staff vs guest).
  • Test wired ethernet to isolate Wi-Fi from ISP problems.
  • Check if the issue is one device or everyone — that points to client vs infrastructure.

Coverage and placement

Access points belong centrally and elevated, not inside metal cabinets or behind concrete pillars. Large sites need multiple APs with planned overlap, not one high-power router in the corner. Use heat-mapping during office fit-outs when possible.

Channels and band steering

  • 2.4 GHz travels farther but is crowded — use channels 1, 6, or 11 only.
  • 5 GHz and 6 GHz offer more throughput but shorter range — ideal for desks and meeting rooms.
  • Enable band steering so capable devices prefer 5 GHz automatically.
  • Reduce transmit power on overlapping APs to minimise co-channel interference.

Security without breaking usability

Use WPA2-Enterprise or WPA3 where RADIUS is available; WPA2-Personal with a strong passphrase is acceptable for smaller offices. Isolate guest Wi-Fi from internal servers and use a captive portal if required for compliance.

When to upgrade hardware

Consumer routers struggle beyond a handful of users. Business-grade access points (Ubiquiti, Aruba, Cisco Meraki, etc.) support central management and firmware updates. FKS Computers designs and supports wireless networks for South African offices and industrial sites.
